Several friends and I go out for a casual dinner every Monday night, and we have been doing this for several years. However, we have an issue about where to go for the dinner. Some want to go to the same restaurant every Monday, and some want to go to different places every Monday. For a while now, we have taken turns choosing where to go, and this has worked fine. But it would be good for us to have a conversation to explore the common ground of what kind of food we like or which places we like, so that we are more likely to please more members of the group. So, we met (for dinner on Monday) to have this conversation. In exploring the common ground, we found that we tend to like casual restaurants, but not the big chain restaurants. We all like Mexican food, and we all like the occasional burger. We also found that there are some restaurants that only one or two of us liked. (Who knew!) After our conversation, we have some “regular” places picked out, but decided that we still liked the idea of having a different person choose each week. Now, however, we have a better idea of which places more of the group like. It was an enlightening conversation, and I think we all feel better about making the choice now.
